What makes a great website?
|
An ideal website for an online book store is not the same as
an ideal website for a church or a photographer.
Any website should have a clear set of goals and objectives. These are surpisingly
easily determined by answering questions and a little
brainstorming. Some of the most key questions almost seem
too obvious to even be asked, such as:
- Why will this website exist?
- What purpose will it serve?
- How will this site further the company's goals?
|
A
good website is one that meets those goals and objectives; one that fulfills the purpose for which it was created.

First Impressions
|
The appearance of your website creates the first impression for
many of your site visitors. An attractive, professional design
can enhance your company's image. A poor design can drive
people away, never to return or do business with your company.
With so many other good websites, possibly including your
competitors', many people have little tolerance for bad sites.

Finding Information
|
When people arrive at your site, it is important that they are able
to find what they are looking for. A brutal truth to remember is that
generally speaking, people care much less about you than what
you can do for them. In most cases, if people are seeking more in
depth information about your company, they will dig deeply in to
your site to find it.
Don't make the mistake of having company-centric top level links, such as "About Us", "Our Goals", "Our Mission", "Our Beliefs". You will lose site visitors quickly. Give people easy access to the information they are looking for!
|
Consider the website you are looking at right now. By far the top
item of interest to our site visitors is our portfolio. People want to
see our work in order to assess our company and our capabilities. So we put screen shots
of our work in panels on the right of most pages of our site.
These panels are chosen at random by Cold Fusions's random
function and their data pulled from an SQL2000 database.
